Dads Need Downtime Too: Finding Space in a Busy Family Life

A belated Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers and father figures we know at Ultra.

Father’s Day is a great reminder of the role dads play supporting their families, working hard, and often putting everyone else first. But somewhere between school runs, work deadlines, mowing the lawn, and trying to be present at home, one thing tends to slip down the list: time for themselves.

At Ultra, we see this all the time. Many of our members are busy dads who don’t have hours each week to dedicate to training, but they know that looking after their health helps them show up better at work and at home.

Why downtime matters

Downtime doesn’t just mean lying on the couch (though that has its place!). For many dads, real “downtime” is about having an outlet, somewhere to switch off from work stress, step away from the family juggle, and do something purely for themselves. Movement, fitness, and community tick all those boxes.

Exercise has been shown to:

  • Reduce stress and improve mood
  • Boost energy (yes, even when you feel tired going in)
  • Improve long-term health outcomes, keeping you active for family adventures
  • Create a mental break so you return to your family more present and patient

Finding space in a busy schedule

The biggest barrier we hear? Time. Between work and family, carving out an hour feels impossible. But here’s the secret: it doesn’t have to be perfect to count.

  • Short and sharp works: A 60 minute CrossFit class can fit into a lunch break or before school drop-off.
  • Routine beats willpower: Treat training like a meeting you can’t cancel. Block it into your week and stick to it.
  • Community helps: Training alongside others who get it — other busy parents, professionals, shift workers — keeps you accountable and motivated.

Ultra is built for real life

We know our niche: professionals with families who are balancing a lot. Ultra isn’t about elite athletes training twice a day, it’s about making fitness work in the real world. That means flexible class times, workouts that scale to your fitness level, and a community that understands when you come in a bit tired because the kids were up all night.

This Father’s Day, we’re reminding all dads: downtime isn’t selfish, it’s essential. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Looking after your health is one of the best gifts you can give your family.

So, here’s your nudge: make space for yourself this week. Come and train, move, and recharge. Your body (and your family) will thank you for it.
