Thinking About Your First Competition?

With the CrossFit Open wrapping up in mid-March, many athletes have just had their first taste of competition. For some, it may have been the first time they pushed themselves through a workout under the pressure of the clock, surrounded by others doing the same workout and cheering each other on.

Maybe you surprised yourself with what you were capable of. Maybe you discovered a new level of competitiveness. Or maybe you simply enjoyed being part of the buzz and atmosphere that the Open brings to the gym each year.

For many people, the Open is the first step into the world of competition.

And it often leaves people wondering… could I actually do a real competition?

Competitions can look intense from the outside — big lifts, fast workouts, crowds cheering and athletes pushing themselves to their limits. It’s easy to assume competitions are only for elite athletes.

But the truth is, some of the best competition experiences happen at the beginner and intermediate levels.

Local competitions are designed to be inclusive, supportive and fun. They’re an opportunity to challenge yourself, test your training and experience the energy of the CrossFit community in a completely different environment.

It’s Not About Winning

Your first competition isn’t about standing on the podium.

It’s about showing up, giving your best effort and discovering what you’re capable of.

Competitions often reveal strengths you didn’t know you had. You might lift a little heavier, move a little faster, or push through a workout you once thought was impossible. The adrenaline, the crowd, and the atmosphere can bring out something special.

For many athletes, the biggest win is simply stepping onto the competition floor.

The Team Experience

Many local competitions are run in pairs or small teams, which makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Training with teammates in the lead-up builds excitement and accountability. On competition day, you’re cheering each other on, celebrating small wins, and supporting each other through the tougher workouts.

There’s something special about tackling a hard workout alongside someone who’s just as nervous and excited as you are.

The Atmosphere

Competition days have a unique energy.

Music pumping, people cheering, coaches supporting their athletes, and the buzz of everyone pushing themselves just a little harder than usual.

Even if you’re not the fastest or strongest athlete on the floor, the atmosphere is incredibly motivating. The CrossFit community has a reputation for cheering loudest for the last person to finish — and it’s absolutely true.

A Few Tips for Your First Competition

If you’re thinking about signing up for your first event, here are a few simple tips:

Choose the right division

Most competitions offer beginner, intermediate and advanced categories. Be honest about your current level and pick the division that best suits your experience.

Focus on the experience

Your goal should simply be to participate, learn and enjoy the day.

Prepare but don’t stress

Keep attending classes, practice the movements you find challenging, and trust the work you’ve already put in.

Fuel and hydrate

Competition days can be long. Bring snacks, water and something comfortable to wear between events.

Nothing new on competition day

Stick with what you know. Wear the shoes you normally train in, eat the foods you’re used to, and bring the grips, belt or gear you’ve already trained with. Competition day isn’t the time to experiment with new outfits, nutrition strategies or equipment.

  1. Enjoy the moment

Take photos, cheer for others and soak up the atmosphere

More Than Just a Workout

Competitions aren’t just about fitness. They’re about community, shared effort and creating memories.

You’ll push yourself harder than you expected, cheer louder than you thought possible, and probably go home with a few sore muscles, some great stories, and maybe even some cool competition merch.

And once you’ve done one, there’s a good chance you’ll want to do another.
